Keeping Score – Are You Keeping Track of Your Performance?

I’m a fan of the CPL and have been since its inception in 2013. I wasn’t always a cricket fan and I’ll admit I still have not watched a test match. Maybe having been introduced to one-day matches I got hooked there and appreciate the engagement throughout the sport. I believe one-day cricket appeals to me because of the numbers. You can always track progress of the team and anticipate match outcomes.

If I start to watch a match after it has begun, I can always catch up as soon as I see the score board.

Here a few things I’ll find out:

  • How much of the game has been played
  • Runs made
  • Batsmen that are out
  • Overs remaining
  • If one team is already out, there is even more to know
  • Batting team’s target score
  • Required run rate for the batting team to win

So why am I talking to you as a Business Owner about Cricket?!

Are you, or any member of your team, able to pull up your scoreboard and know:

  • Your target, and
  • Your required run rate: that is the average monthly revenue and profit needed to meet annual target?

Do you even have a scoreboard?

Having a scoreboard tells you what you and your team is supposed to do for the business:

  • Sales to be generated,
  • Gross and Net Profit to achieve and
  • How effectively you are achieving these results.

It goes as far as helping you to decide which game strategy is best!

In the game of cricket, depending on the number of overs remaining whether you’re chasing runs and which batsmen are in and remaining, you may go for ‘boundaries’, or a cautiously hit ‘singles’.

In your business, depending on the months remaining and whether these have seasonal trends, as well as budget, you may determine which strategies are best.

Where do you stand at the half-year mark?

Half the calendar year has gone! Have you achieved at least 50% of your year’s target? What is the run rate, and what does it mean for the strategies that you will now implement?

If you don’t have these numbers, now is as good a time as any develop your scoreboard and track monthly.
